The Frankfurter Buchmesse (11-15 October 2017) brings together the publishing industry from all over the world. The fair offers the next generation of publishing professionals information of interest about training and development opportunities and a chance to connect with HR managers, industry leaders and creative lateral thinkers.

The Azubistro as a venue

This year, the new generation of publishing professionals along with secondary school graduates and career starters have their own venue at the fair: the stage shared by the Azubistro and “Studium rund ums Buch” (“Studying around Books”) in Hall 4.1 D 72.

A diverse professional programme will be presented for all interested parties, composed of discussions and expert talks around topics like the book and the publishing industry and supplemented by readings and conversations with well-known authors. Mediacampus frankfurt trainees will serve coffee and snacks and Students will report first-hand about their respective fields of study.

Career education at the Börsenverein

At the stand of the Börsenverein (German Publishers & Booksellers Association), a range of professional education events will be offered for training providers, staff and junior employees. For example, on Wednesday at 11 a.m., there will be a panel discussion about the new qualified job of “e-commerce merchandiser”.

On Thursday, from noon to 2 p.m., the “next-generation lunch” of the German Publishers & Booksellers Association and its regional divisions will be held in the Azubistro, with the young professional speakers Cleo Ciba and Philipp Nawroth. Career education speakers from the association at the state and federal level will be available to answer questions regarding training and career opportunities.

On Saturday, mediacampus frankfurt, the Börsenverein and Bommersheim Consulting, invite career starters and everybody who is interested to the Young Professionals Day to join the talks and round tables about breaking into the job and discovering career opportunities in the book and media industry.

Discounts and free tickets

Booksellers and media managers who are still in training, as well as students of related fields such as bibliography, production, publishing or library science, receive free tickets for the full duration of the fair.

In addition, this year, the Frankfurter Buchmesse has an especially attractive offer for registered students in all fields of study for the trade visitor days (11-13 October). By presenting a valid student ID card, they can purchase a day ticket for just 18 euros at the ticket counter. At the weekend, admission costs just 14 euros.

International initiatives to support young talents

In cooperation with leading publishing industry trade magazines, the Frankfurter Buchmesse sponsors six initiatives to support young professionals in Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, USA, China and Brazil. The Young Talent programme is aimed at publishing professionals from these countries. The winners will be invited to the Frankfurter Buchmesse, have access to the Business Club and participate in a comprehensive programme of events during the fair.

On Wednesday, 11 October 2017, at 5:30 p.m., visitors can meet the participants at the Young Talent Reception at the International Stage (Hall 5.1 A 128). On Thursday, 12 October, interested parties can meet and chat with the winners of the initiatives at the Business Breakfast. This event will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Business Club of the Frankfurter Buchmesse and is open to all trade visitors – but registration is required: https://www.xing-events.com/XIISLUG.html

Media partners of the Young Talent initiative are: The Bookseller (UK), Publishers Weekly (USA), Börsenblatt – weekly magazine for the German book trade (Germany), Publish News (Brazil), China Publishers (China), Schweizer Buchhandel (Switzerland) and the Dutch Publishers Association (Netherlands).

The Frankfurt Fellowship Programme, held annually since 1998, is an international initiative of the Frankfurter Buchmesse to promote young talent in publishing. This year, 97 editors, rights managers and literary agents from 42 countries applied. Now, 16 publishing professionals from 16 different countries – including, for the first time, Iceland – have the chance to build their own international professional network.

New this year is funding for one participant as the “Fred Kobrak Frankfurt Fellow”, in memory of Fred Kobrak, a dedicated and long-serving player in the international publishing industry who passed away in December 2016 at the age of 88 years. www.book-fair.com/fellows

German-French-language exchange

The Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt Programme supports young literary translators from Switzerland, France and Germany. The programme is organised by the Frankfurter Buchmesse in cooperation with the German French Youth Office (DFJW/OFAJ), Bureau International de l’Édition Française and Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia. Under the auspices of translator Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt, ten young translators (five German-language and five French-language) visit publishing houses in France, Germany and Switzerland and work on their own projects with support from experienced translators. www.book-fair.com/goldschmidt

With France as Guest of Honour at the book fair this year, the Paris-Frankfurt Fellowship takes a particular importance. The programme is aimed at young people who have found their vocation in the publishing or bookselling industry and are enriching the sector with new ideas and exceptional dedication. The fellowship gives them a chance to make contacts and enhance their understanding of the market. http://www.buchmesse.de/en/Focus_on/more_topics/exchange/index.html

Other forms of support for the next generation

The Poster Competition for Young Designers has existed for a few years now and is enjoying growing popularity in the media and with design schools. In addition, there are tours of the Guest of Honour Pavilion aimed directly at students.

The Frankfurter Buchmesse is a subsidiary of the German Publishers & Booksellers Association. www.book-fair.com
